The competition class we run at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School will be closed on 14th and 21st of March. On the 14th of March the school will be running a production of Bugsy Malone and they require both the gym and the main hall. March the 21st is Good Friday and as this is a bank holiday the sport centre will be closed.

If you value your competition training, try get to the Tuesday class at Planet Fitness on Halifax road. As the Ultimate 1-1 competition is only at the end of the month, there will only be one more Friday training session for final preparations. Remember, you have to attend our competition classes before you can enter competitions.

From the 15th of March we will have a third Team Taekwondo venue at Brooksbank School in Elland, Halifax. This will be run by Stephen Cocker with his brothers Andrew and Chris helping out were possible. The classes will be on Tuesdays 18:30-20:00 and Saturdays 10:30-12:00. We will be arranging a demonstration for the opening day and would like to invite all Team Taekwondo members to call down and help launch the new venue in style. There will be no cost to the launch class and the more people we have the more fun it will be.

On 16 th of February Kierran Young and Chris Cocker took part in the North East Fight Night hosted by Brian Tilley of the Chungdokwan. Kierran was first up and a little sooner than expected as the previous fight only went as far as the first round. This was much to the disappointment of the referee, our very own Amy Payne who refereed two matches and was a corner judge for the remainder. To add to the pressure of a few hundred people watching Kierran in his first Fight Night he had to change his body armour and head guard just seconds before the match began, as he had be told he would be in blue rather than red.

The first round was fast and furious and after much leather was thrown ended with Kierran a point down. During this round he narrowly missed his taller opponent with a reverse turning kick. Had this of landed, he would have been a point up rather than a point down. In the second and third round Jamie Abley extended his led and if my memory servers me right, the fight ended 12-6 to Jamie. Kierran fought well, especially in the first round against a taller and heaver opponent.

Chris was scheduled to fight Ryan Uren in the 6 th fight and did so with his new found relaxed fighting style. As Chris was still carrying a foot injury, he had to use all his experience to only throw shots that he knew would score, which included two reverse turning kicks that were thrown with pin point accuracy and control. As Chris had knocked out Ryan in the British Championships last December, he decided to take a more reserved approach and give the spectators value for money, even attempting a spinning 540 in the dying seconds of the last round.

Both boys fought well and photos (Provide by Jackie Wood) and video footage (filmed by Conner Young) will be posted on the Team Taekwondo web site soon.

In November Team Taekwondo will be hosting its own Fight Night. We hope to pit Team Taekwondo players against other local players from True Spirit, Saber and Dal Seong clubs. Keep an eye on the calendar and news section for more information.

The Chungdokwan organisation is holding a Fight Night on the 16th of February in Ferryhill, Co. Durham. The Fight Night evening is a social get together which includes between ten and twelve Taekwondo bouts. For the first time, Team Taekwondo will have two players competing in the event. Chris Cocker and Kierran Young have been selected to represent our club.

We want to make sure we have as much support for our players as possible. If we share the driving between a few willing volunteers, I am sure we will have enough people to make our support heard when our classmates are competing.

Tickets are available at the discounted rate of £6 each. If you would like to attend and show your support, pay for your ticket as soon as possible. This fee includes the cost of the disco after the matches have finished.

Later this year we will be organising our own Fight Night. Attending the Chungdokwan event will give you a good idea what it’s all about.

Due to GCSE assessments, none of the halls at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School will be available on the evening of Friday the 1st of February. Unfortunately without a suitable hall we have to cancel Friday's competition training class. This is only a one off and classes will run as normal the following week.

Some of you may have noticed that on the 24th of January Chris Cocker, Ashley Ambler, Terri Lumb and Andrew Greenwood appeared in both the Evening Courier and Brighouse Echo. This article was centred on the achievements of Team Taekwondo players at the British National Championships at the end of last year. The write-up in the Evening Courier was massive and covered around two thirds of the page. The one in the Brighouse Echo was slightly smaller but still more than welcome. In the future we will be sending articles to the local papers more frequently. This will highlight achievements of our students and promote the club at the same time as help increasing awareness of Taekwondo as a sport and a Martial Art.
